Eyewitness Mike Paley said the car spun almost 180° and ploughed in to the wall connecting two homes on Salthouse Road.

The impact catapulted the car crashed into agarden wall, demolishing a concrete gate post, crushing a wheelie bin and scattering rubbish on the road.

Phil Mawson, of Salthouse Road said he was woken by the bang.

“There was an almighty bang,” he said, “I thought something might have fallen out of the truck.

“But when I looked outside I found the car had been sent in to my garden wall, and the gate post had been completely broken off.

“It was a shock that’s for sure, the last thing you expect at 5am is to find a car facing down your drive.”

Several other neighbours were woken by the noise and went out to investigate.

Kath Barnard, also of Salthouse Road, said: “The car was a complete mess, the side hit by the truck was totally destroyed.”

She said trucks like the one involved in the crash were not an uncommon site in Millom. But she added: “we’ve never had any issues before.”

Another neighbour described how despite the damage, it could have been much more serious, as several cars that regularly park on the road weren’t there at the time of the crash.

“It could have been a lot worse,” he said.

“The street was a lot less busy than usual, with less cars parked outside.”

“There could have been a lot more damage if the rest of the cars were there.”

Luckily no one was hurt in the incident.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
