OUTRAGEOUS tales will be told in Santon Bridge as fibbers battle it out to be crowned 'World's Biggest Liar'.

The contest, sponsored by Jennings Brewery in association with Copeland Council, will be held at the Bridge Inn on Thursday, November 15.

Last year Wasdale's Mike Naylor - aka 'Monkey Liar' - reclaimed his crown as the world's greatest fib-teller.

The five-time champion entertained a sold-out crowd and a panel of judges with a funny story about his visit to the moon on his uncle - and fell-running legend - Joss Naylor's rocket.

He told a tale about the Wasdale Space Race which including him bumping into the Queen, Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn on the moon.

And revealed he was the lovechild of the Biggest Liar's founder Will Ritson and writer Beatrix Potter.

Sarah Grave, Jennings Brewery assistant brand manager, said: "If you consider yourself skilled at telling a tall tale, or just enjoy listening to others trying to pull the wool over your eyes, the World's Biggest Liar competition could be the best little event you'll ever hear of."

The contest is a tribute to 19th century pub landlord Will Ritson, a character famed locally for his ability to spin a dubious yarn.

One of his best-known fibs was that locally-grown turnips were so large that, once hollowed out for dinner, they could be used to house the local Herdwick sheep.

Each liar gets five minutes to tell the biggest and most-convincing untruth they can muster, with entertaining, amusing and fanciful fibs tending to do best.

If you are a lawyer or politician then unfortunately you won't be able to take part, as people practicing these trades “are judged to be too skilled at telling porkies” - but otherwise it's open to anyone.

Previous winners include former Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins, who became the first female winner in 2006, and John “Johnny Liar” Graham, who took the title seven times with tales of travelling under the sea in a wheelie bin and Germans invading Britain to capture digital TV decoders.

This year's event will start at 7pm.

Tickets cost £12 and include a tattie pot supper. Entry forms and tickets for the con-test are available from Jennings Brewery Shop by calling 01900 820362.
