KEEPER Scott Carson’s former West Cumbrian amateur club is hoping for a cash windfall after his sale to Premiership giants Liverpool.

Wearside League outfit Cleator Moor Celtic hope to benefit from a sell-on clause inserted into Carson’s contract when he turned professional with Leeds in June 2002.

The club was promised an undisclosed percentage of any future transfer fee and Celtic must now wait to see how much they will receive.

Carson signed last month for Liverpool in a dream £1 million move to Anfield, where he will go up against Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland – currently out for three months with a back injury –- for the number one jersey.

Leeds United agreed a figure of around £750,000 for the England Under-21 international, with add-ons taking the sum up to the £1 million mark.

The Championship club have been forced to sell many of their top names after being up to £25 million in debt before the takeover by Ken Bates last month.

Bates’ £10 million takeover was set to lift the threat of administration at the crisis-hit club.

The hoped-for windfall at Celtic would be a huge boost for one of the top amateur football clubs in the west of the county.

It would be a big thank you to the club that coached 19-year-old Carson to the footballing heights he is currently hitting.

Carson was playing for Celtic’s under-18s aged just 12 before joining the Elland Road side at 16, before the club tumbled out of the Premiership.

At the same time he was called up to train with England’s under-17s, with international under-21 honours to follow.

Cleator Moor Celtic landed a whopping lottery bonanza back in October 2002 because of the work the club puts in with the youth of the area.

They were awarded a £528,792 grant from Sport England at the time, which was used to build a new clubhouse and car park.
