DONALD (Donnie) Bewick of Adams Gill, Plumbland, who died on April 26, aged 83, in the intensive care unit at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, was well known in the Hound Trailing Association as a dog breeder and racer throughout the country from the 1950s until the 1990s, and still had a share in a dog, along with his wife, Mabel.

He served on the local committee for many years, organising the Parsonby trails, and, among his many dogs, Gill Cracker, Gill Guide and Gill Clipper, won many awards in the district.

Donald Bewick was born at Prospect, near Aspatria, in 1923, the second of a family of three.

The family moved to Rectory Farm, Parsonby, in 1938.

His father, Martin, had previously run a cattle wagon.

During the war, Donnie drove for Gilcrux hauliers, Johnston Bros, many times leading lime into Scotland from Warthole limeworks, Plumbland.

He set up in business on his own after the war, continuing until the 1980s; his eldest son, David, still drives a wagon under his own name.

Donnie married Mabel in 1947; they moved to Adams Gill in 1948.

Besides David, they had a younger son, Peter, and several grandchildren.

The news of his decease came as a shock to all his friends and acquaintances.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 2, at St Cuthbert’s Church, Plumbland, followed by cremation at Carlisle.
