COPELAND Borough Council has moved to strengthen its communications team with the appointment of Ian Curwen as senior communications officer.

Copeland is also looking to recruit a communications officer to complete the team.

The changes come as the council aims to develop its procedures to ensure the council communicates successfully with the community it serves. The team will be responsible for the council’s media relations, publications, events and internal communication.

Ian joined Copeland Council just under four years ago, having graduated with a BA in Social Policy from the University of York, and has been the council’s communications officer for a little over three years. The three-person team also includes a graphic designer/webmaster.

Copeland Council leader Elaine Woodburn said: “Ian has worked very hard as acting senior communications officer for a number of months now, and deserves this opportunity. We are committed to improving the way we communicate with the public, and once the team is up to full strength we hope to achieve this.”

Outside of the council, Ian is a keen Leeds United fan who enjoys a pint of real ale on his trips to the hidden gems of Copeland’s country pubs.

Ian said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to this position.

“The role is a diverse and challenging one, but to be working in the strengthened communications team at this time makes it an exciting and rewarding prospect.

“I am looking forward to playing my part in this and as such, I will be looking to ensure that we keep all our customers informed and involved in all of Copeland Council’s services.”
