THE FORMER Kangol factory at Cleator is set to be knocked down to make space for offices.

If the application for its demolition is approved by Copeland Council, the dilapidated factory will be flattened “as soon as possible” according to the applicant, North Associates.

Cleator Moor Town Council has shown support for the developer’s ideas to renovate the disused building into three detached office buildings with 265 parking spaces.

The application is the latest in a series of developments planned for the large site by North Associates. At the end of 2014, Copeland Council approved plans for 79 new houses, a new office block and conversion of the former Cleator Mills building into further office space.

John Blue, project manager at North Associates, said: “We’ve had feedback from residents and the town council that support the decision to demolish this dilapidated building, which is in an extremely poor condition.

“Locals have described the site as an ‘eyesore’ and it has been attracting all sorts of antisocial behaviour. We’re still looking for developers to come forward and take advantage.”

The Kangol hat factory opened in 1938 and ceased production in 2009 under its American owners Bollman Headwear with the loss of 33 jobs.

“The regeneration of this site will help Cleator take advantage of the expanding opportunities associated with the nuclear industry in West Cumbria,” said John. “In addition, it will create employment and help sustain services in the local area.

“There is no telling how long it will take to find developers, but it’s important to find the right ones rather than rushing it.”
