Despite never having boxed, Gary Woods, 33, won three bouts of the locally-organised amateur contest.
The money – to fund two new school guinea pigs – was raised through sponsorship and a £300 donation from the Clash of the Titans organisers.
Gary, of Honister Road, Mirehouse, decided to donate to the school which is where his wife Natalie’s five-year-old godson, Finlay Bragg, attends.
Charlie – Natalie and Gary’s son – was born on the same day as Finlay to Natalie’s best friend, Nicola.
Gary said: “I had never competed before so it was a good opportunity to have a go, and raise money for Mayfield School.’’
He took part in three bouts at the event before winning the title and taking home the belt. Gary, who has taken part in Total Warrior competitions, trains with his friends, Paul Smitham and Ian Glaister.
Family, friends and Gary’s shift colleagues at Sellafield all supported him with sponsorship.
Gary, who is also taking part in the next Clash of the Titans to be held on November 28, further thanked its organisers, David Straughton and Mark Hodgson, of Workington’s Hokushinko Fight Academy, for their support.
The money will pay for cages, food and equipment for two guinea pigs, which have been donated by Tony Watson’s pet shop at Workington.
