IT'S the Hard Knock Life for members of Whitehaven Theatre of Youth when they take to the stage for Annie Junior the Musical.

Around 40 talented youngsters -- aged between seven and 18 years -- will be performing the famous show at the Solway Civic Hall from Wednesday, June 29 to Saturday, July 2 starting at 7pm.

One of the young actors is Todd Bell who has recently appeared in London's West End.

Maria Morton, a volunteer at the youth group, said: "We are very proud that after Todd finished his spell in Billy Elliot, he eagerly came back to the Youth Theatre and is playing the part of Rooster in this forthcoming production.''

The famous musical, Annie, which includes the songs Tomorrow and It's the Hard Knock Life, has now been adapted for young performers.

It tells the story of a little orphan who charms everyone despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Finding herself in a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan, she eventually finds a new home and family with billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

Whitehaven Youth Group meet each Thursday, in their own premises at Haig Enterprise Park, with sessions including singing, voice projection, improvisations, theatrecraft, dance and movement.

Maria said the aim was to have "a whole lot of fun and interaction which boosts confidence and self-esteem.''

The group's past credits including shows such as The Little Mermaid, Ebenezer Scrooge, High School Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and King and I. Members have also shown off their talents in many local charity concerts.
