A teenager fought off two men as they attempted to steal his mobile phone.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened on the cycle path near St Gregory's Primary School, in Whitehaven, at about 2pm on Saturday.

The 17-year-old victim was walking along the path when two slimly-built men, both described as white, in their early twenties and wearing grey muddy tracksuits, appeared from the bushes.

The pushed the teenager and demanded that he hand over his phone.

One of the would-be robbers wore distinctive yellow-coloured trainers and may have had a ginger patchy beard.

The victim fought off the men who then fled empty-handed in the direction of the Nisa shop on Whinlatter Road.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Detective Constable David Matthews at Workington CID by calling police on 101.
