Anthony Joseph Williamson, 61, of West View, Hensingham, appeared before magistrates in Workington yesterday.
Andrew Travis, prosecuting, said Williamson and his friend Teresa Wood had been drinking one night in January and had gone back to her house in Workington. They had an argument and Williamson punched her in the mouth.
She lost two teeth and had to have root canal surgery to another tooth.
The case was adjourned to August 5 to allow for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
Williamson was released on bail.
