A golf-mad group of Sellafield workers have got their fundraising down to a tee.

The 11th annual HALES Ryder Cup, contested between engineering and operations workers on site, was held at Whitehaven Golf Club, with the operations team emerging victorious, 7.5 to 5.5.

But the big winners on the day were charities Give Us a Break 2010, a campaign to build a local respite centre and Brain Tumour Research, who will split the £4,047 raised on the day.

Since it was established in 2005 with only 12 members, the HALES Golf Society has expanded and its annual Ryder Cup-style tournament grown in popularity every year.

This year's event attracted 52 golfers and three caddies, plus a host of supporters who attended the presentation evening.

Over £30,000 has been raised over 11 years of the organisation, and organisers extended thanks to supporters and those who donated raffle prizes, including Sellafield Ltd, Arco, Whitehaven Golf Club, Dumfries and County Golf Club, Thomas Graham, Shepley, Blackbeck Hotel, NNL, ESKK, Flow Control, Emerson Chloride, NW Total, BV, Eriks, Furmanite and Atlas Copco.
