Cherry Tingle began leading the college, at Lillyhall, at the start of this term, and has already brought in numerous changes.
The Energy Coast University Technical College specialises in science and tech-based studies for 14 to 19-year-olds. It works closely with partners including Sellafield Ltd, Gen2 and the National Nuclear Laboratory.
Ms Tingle has taken up the role after a turbulent year for the UTC, following the departure of its previous principal and two interims.
The Department of Education recently carried out a monitoring visit and was pleased with the college, Ms Tingle said.
“I have said to the staff and the students we could be outstanding. The bottom line with the UTC is that it has to be good enough for my child and therefore, good enough for anybody else’s child.”
Ms Tingle said the college is “increasing its rigour on target setting, tracking and high academic achievements”.
She has introduced numerous measures including a quality assurance programme. And feedback is used in the UTC’s improvement plan.
Ms Tingle said her aim is for the college to maximise links with employers and make students aware of the different opportunities.
Prior to working at the UTC, Ms Tingle was a curriculum specialist at the Association of School and College Leaders. She has led schools in Blackburn and Blackpool. She has also been a deputy head and a science teacher.
