The festive spirit will be brought to town as dozens of dancers take to the stage in a Christmas show.

As well as performing to popular Christmas tunes such as Frosty the Snowman and White Christmas, members of Cowper School of Dance will also dance a number of non-festive routines.

The seniors will perform a burlesque tap number, there will be Little People from Les Miserables and and a Legally Blonde routine which saw dancers scoop runner-up at a competition in Blackpool last weekend.

Principal Adrienne Kelly said she wanted to try something different this year, rather than a traditional show.

"We've got a really good variety this year," she said. "Rather than be all Christmassy, I thought we'll give them a mix."

More than 100 dancers are involved in the production, which will be staged at Workington's Carnegie Theatre on December 18.

They range in age from three to 33-years-old and come from both Copeland and Allerdale.

Many dancers at Cowper's, which is celebrating its 145th anniversary this year, start as youngsters and stay with the school for years.

"It's a real joy seeing them progress," said Adrienne. "It's lovely to see the little ones grow and get to seniors."

The show is already a near sell-out with more than 300 tickets sold so far, which is not a surprise to Adrienne.

"We usually have a sell-out performance for all of the shows," she said. "I'm just really proud of everyone involved."

It's an exciting time for the dance school, which runs classes in Workington and Whitehaven, as they've recently found out that 34 of the senior dancers have passed an audition to perform on Broadway in New York next year.

The Christmas show will feature tap, modern and ballet to songs including When a child is born, Candyman and Waka Waka. It will finish with a Christmas can-can.
