This was the moment an amazing young woman captivated the Royal Family’s golden couple.

Poppy Slater shared her inspirational story with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as she was recognised for her bravery.

The 13-year-old, from Hillcrest, Whitehaven, was one of the winners at the annual WellChild Awards in London.

She was recognised for the way she has refused to be beaten by panenteric Crohn’s disease.

Poppy collected the Inspirational Child accolade following acts that have included attending a school at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary when unable to get to classes at Keswick School because of her treatment.

And she shone at what was a glittering occasion, with other guests including former England rugby coach Sir Clive Woodward and presenters Gaby Roslin and Matt Allwright, who also hosted the night.

The duchess and the duke were welcomed by WellChild chief executive Colin Dyer and the organisation’s chairman, Andrew Osborne.

Prince Harry has been patron of WellChild, the national charity for seriously ill children and their families, since 2007 and regularly attends the annual awards ceremony.

Poppy was chosen from hundreds of nominations across the UK after she was put forward by her parents, Jayne and Gary.

She suffers from acute inflammation throughout her digestive tract, which means surgery to relieve the disease is not possible.

Over the last seven years, she’s had extensive stays in hospital and has to take medication to keep her condition in remission, as there is no cure. Her side effects include extreme weight loss, fatigue, severe joint pain and swelling, skin disorders, nausea and hair loss.
