If children are obese by the age of four, “the battle is as good as lost”, according to the experts. Yet new figures show the number of overweight young children has increased - now a quarter of children are overweight or obese when they start school at the age of four.

Girls more likely to be overweight than boys

Girls are almost 50 per cent more likely to be overweight than boys by the age of seven, research suggests. Nearly one in four (23 per cent) girls are too heavy at this age compared with just over one in six (18 per cent) boys, according to a study by the Institute of Education.
