Workington Town's Elliott Miller in the running for fastest man title

Workington Town winger Elliott Miller confirmed he is happy to test his searing pace against Super League’s speed merchants in the Rugby League Fastest Man competition.

And if his try-scoring feats are any guide, he should stand a chance of putting the top-flight flyers in the shade.

Miller’s record of 11 tries in his last six games, including a hat-trick in the demolition of league leaders Doncaster on Sunday, is the best run in the pro game.

“If pushed forward I would definitely give it a go,” said Miller, on the Fastest Man competition, held at the Rugby League 9s Grand Final night at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, in Leeds, on Tuesday, June 26,

“I would hopefully stand a good chance but I don’t know.

“There are some quick lads in Super League. Hopefully I would do all right.”

Salford winger Jodie Broughton claimed the 2011 title following a dramatic photo-finish with Ben Jones-Bishop of Leeds.

Miller, who hopes one day to get his chance in Super League, would not be the first Cumbrian to be in the shake-up as Craig Calvert, at 20, finished runner-up to St Helens winger in the 2004 event, before he had even made his pro debut for Haven.

Just 21, Miller underwent pre-season shoulder surgery, leading him to put in extra fitness work alone, which he believes has helped his cause this term. And the challenge now is to continue in his rich vein of form.

“Hopefully I can keep it going, if the team keeps playing well and passes it out and provides me with the space to run,” added Miller, who has excelled at full-back as well as on the flank this year.

“I have been playing two positions and I didn’t think I would get this many tries this quickly. I don’t really like the wing, to be honest. I like to be in the middle more and get a bit more ball.

“I think we’ll be pushing for promotion, if not winning the league, especially after Sunday. The second-half was the best I’ve seen us play. This year we seem to have gelled as a team.”
