Workington Town full-back Brett Carter is facing a possible second suspension after being cited for an incident in the Good Friday derby.

Carter had been banned for two matches for throwing a punch in the Northern Rail Cup clash with Haven at Derwent Park earlier in the season.

The second incident on Good Friday came in the closing minutes of the first-half when he caught Whitehaven hooker Chris Smith on the jaw with a shoulder charge. But Workington feel any ban would be harsh and are hoping he escapes without any further suspension.

Town coach Gary Charlton says the referee had a perfect view of the incident and that he saw it as shoulder to shoulder, and did not see fit to penalise or punish Carter in the game.

“I think Brett went in shoulder to shoulder but Chris braced himself and was therefore not standing as tall, so was caught on the jaw. I have spoken to a member of the disciplinary review panel who told me that they spent 40 minutes viewing the incident and there was some doubt over the allegations,” said Charlton.

Carter scored two tries for Town in Sunday’s 58-0 destruction of North Wales Crusaders, a win which kept them at the top of Championship One.

The full-back has developed into a key player and Town will be mindful that they have a leadership showdown at Barrow coming up next month and won’t want to lose him for that crucial test.
