Workington speedway fans arrange Czech Grand Prix show

With no speedway at Derwent Park this weekend the Workington Comets Speedway Supporters Club has arranged to show the second round of the Speedway Grand Prix live.

The Czech Grand Prix, from Prague, will begin at 6pm and be shown live in the Waverley Hotel in Workington where owner Delwyn Pears has arranged to put in a couple of screens to ensure the best views possible.

Entry will be free and food can be paid for at the bar.

It had been hoped that Workington’s postponed match with Newcastle could be rearranged for this Saturday but manager Tony Jackson said it was not possible.

Newcastle are scheduled to play Berwick on Saturday but it had hoped that Berwick’s postponed match with Sheffield could take place on Saturday which would have freed Newcastle up to travel to Derwent Park.

Jackson said: “When the first draft of fixtures came out we wanted to have Sheffield here on April 28 but they couldn’t make it which is why we meet them on May 5. It had been hoped that Sheffield’s match with Berwick could be rearranged for this weekend so that we would be able to play Newcastle.

“However, Sheffield can’t make Berwick probably because of the same problems that they couldn’t play us so Newcastle’s planned fixture with Berwick takes priority.”

Therefore Workington have replaced their Premier League fixture with Newcastle on May 26 with the League Cup fixture with the Premier League date to be rearranged.

Workington’s next match isn’t until May 3 when they travel to Redcar for another rearranged fixture and Jackson said it will give some of the riders a chance to recharge their batteries.

He said: “Even some of the riders who are doubling up in the Elite League don’t have any matches because of the Grand Prix this weekend.

“It will give the guys a chance to sort out and work on their bikes because they have had a busy time recently. It will also mean Kenny Ingalls who has been out injured will be fit and ready to race at Redcar.”

Jackson said he will keep an eye on the results of other teams in the northern section of the group over the weekend but said the

Workington sit top of the northern group with 17 points with their closest challengers Newcastle five points behind but with a match in hand.
