Workington Comets skipper Richard Lawson is hoping to bounce back to form after suffering what he called a “dreadful” night for his Elite League club Peterborough on Thursday.

Lawson scored a paid five points from seven rides and admitted it was the worst he had ridden in a long time.

However, he is now looking forward to tonight when Workington take on top of the table Newcastle (7pm start) in what promises to be a classic encounter.

Lawson said: “It will be good to get back to Workington because it is a track I know I can ride well.

“Last time Newcastle were here we beat them although I know they didn’t have their reserves.

“However, they took a big beating at Sheffield on Thursday and hopefully we can capitalise on that.

“Thursday at Peterborough was just one of those nights when I couldn’t seem to get anything right and made some silly mistakes but you can learn a lot from those meetings.”

Workington overcame Newcastle 58-36 in the League Cup on May 26 - ironically the last time the Comets completed a match at Derwent Park - but both teams were missing key riders so the meeting is expected to be a lot closer this time.

Many see the battle between Workington’s Kyle Howarth and Newcastle’s Richie Worrall as to where the match will be won and lost.

Although Lawson believes it will play a part in the match he does not think it will be crucial. He said: “I think our team all round is better by far especially around Derwent Park.

“Some of their guys struggle round here but I am not saying it is going to be a walkover.

“I don’t think the reserves battle is key but it will play a part and there will be some difficult rides for our guys.”
