Workington Comets marched into the semi-finals of the Premier League Knock Out Cup with a commanding 17 point aggregate victory over the Berwick Bandits at the weekend.
Comets had only trailed by two points after Saturday’s first leg and it never looked like enough for Berwick, who were no match for the dominant form the Comets showed at home as they won 10 of the 15 heats in a 98-81 aggregate victory. Every Workington rider scored a win or paid win and there was some fine racing on show.
Workington now go on to meet the winners of the King’s Lynn and Edinburgh quarter-final.
Comets owner Keith Denham said: “It was a really good performance and everybody got stuck in and worked as a team to get the result that we needed.
“The riders all looked in good shape and Peter was just a bit frustrated because he wanted to beat Adrian [Rymel] but always finished behind him in his last three rides.
“I think we are now starting to see the potential of Kenny Ingalls as well showing why we decided to sign him. Every time he comes out on to the track he looks stronger and I think it will only be a couple more weeks before he is scoring more.”
Denham said he didn’t have any preference as to who Comets met in the semi-final but acknowledged that either match would be a tough one to win over the two legs.
He added: “I don’t think it matters who we get and we will just take it as it comes.”
Comets go into next weekend’s matches off the back of the confidence-boosting victory which will see the team order change again with the introduction of the new averages.
Craig Cook will be riding at number one for the matches at home to Birmingham on Saturday and away to Newcastle on Sunday.
Denham said: “It isn’t ideal having Craig at number one but he is riding there because he is the highest averaging rider in the team and hopefully he can stand up to the challenge.
“Next weekend will be tough but after tonight’s performance I think we will be able to handle Birmingham at home.”
