Scunthorpe Scorpions 44 Workington Comets 46: Workington Comets made significant progress when they beat Scunthorpe Scorpions in the first leg of the Knockout Shield.
They should now be able to see it through and complete the victory in tonight’s second leg in Workington.
Team manager Tony Jackson said: “I thought it was a really good team effort in very difficult conditions.
“The track was very greasy throughout and at one point I didn’t think we would get to heat 12.
“We weren’t as impressive as we might have been but I will always take a win on the opposition’s track.”
A solid team effort at the Eddie Wright raceway edged the points in Workington’s favour although they will realise that there is still work to be done to repeat the result.
There were some very good performances from the Cumbrian side.
Lawson was very good and Ingalls was excellent until he fell late on in the meeting putting his position for tonight’s meeting in some doubt.
“It’s early days for Kenny. He was riding well but he has damaged his shoulder again and we will have to wait and see whether he is able to continue again in the home leg,” said Jackson.
Ingalls’ season has been interrupted by injuries and Workington supporters will be hoping there are no further problems ahead.
The American set off like a house on fire, winning his first three races as the Comets were able to build on an opening 5-1 initiated by Ingalls and Rene Bach.
The next three heats were shared before Ingalls and Bach came up trumps again to suggest that the Comets were going to have an awe-inspiring run.
The Comets take-on the Scorpions at Derwent Park tonight (7pm).
Scunthorpe Scorpions 44: Josh Auty 15, Ashley Birks 13+2, Tero Aarnio 6+1, Michael Palm Toft 5+1, Thomas Jorgensen 4+1, Jerran Hart 1, David Howe R/R
Workington Comets 46: Richard Lawson 12+1, Rusty Harrison 9, Gary Irving 7+3, Rene Bach 7+3, Kenny Ingalls 7, Adam Roynon 3+1, Kyle Howarth 1+1
