SCOTTISH opera singer Nicky Spence is the star name as the Rosehill Theatre hosts a weekend of cabaret-style supper concerts.

The Whitehaven venue is introducing a relaxed programme of events on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons - the first being November 4 and 5.

Tenor Nicky Spence, mezzo soprano Victoria Simmonds and pianist Julia Cobby present the two shows.

On Saturday 4, the audience can arrive at 6pm for a glass of Prosecco, then these three talented musicians perform in the theatre in a relaxed, cabaret style setting, followed by supper at approximately 7.30pm.

This is followed with more music in the foyer later.

For this first evening, the programme will include music by Bernstein, Cole Porter, Gershwin, one or two love songs by Robbie Burns, and a surprise or two.

The same three performers return the following afternoon, at 3pm, to present a mix of song from a range of great composers including Richard Strauss, Schumann, Brahms, Fauré, Vaughan Williams, Bizet and Britten. They will then move onto Kurt Weill, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter and more.

Nicky Spence trained at the Guildhall School, and was nominated by the International Opera Awards for Young Singer of the Year in 2015 and was also one of ten artists included in the Times Breakthrough Award at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards.

Victoria Simmonds is another graduate of the Guildhall School, and has appeared in singing roles in performances as far afield as China and Italy, while Carlisle-based Julia Cobby is a professional musician, who has accompanied many high-profile visitors to the county.

There is also a ticket deal available for those that attend both shows, and a discount on accommodation at the nearby Hunday Manor Country House Hotel.
