HARPIST Oliver Wass will be joined by flautist Henry Roberts for the first Keswick Music Society concert of the year at the Theatre by the Lake.

Both rising stars of their instruments, the pair will take the audience on a journey through time from Bach to the Tango, via Telemann, Gluck, Chopin, Debussy, De Falla, Bartok and Piazzola, in music often transformed by the unusual instrumentation.

The concert on Sunday January 7 gets under way at 7.30pm, with a free pre-concert talk from the performers at 6.45pm.

The distinctive sounds of the harp and the flute are among the most evocative in classical music.

Having won the Suoni d’Arpa International Competition in Italy, Wass became the first harpist ever to win the Guildhall Gold Medal, the Guildhall’s most prestigious prize.

Previous winners of the competition include Jacqueline du Pré, Bryn Terfel and Tasmin Little.

He has performed all the major harp concertos, including directing the Handel Harp Concerto in the Barbican Hall, and also performed concertos at the London Handel Festival, the City of London Festival, with the Oxford Sinfonia, and with the World Chamber Orchestra.

He won the Andrea Vigh Jury Prize at the 4th International Harp Competition Szeged.

Henry Roberts also appears alongside Wass in the flute-viola-harp trio, The Pelléas Ensemble, which won the Royal Philarmonic Society Henderson Award, and the 2017 Elias Fawcett Award for Outstanding Chamber Ensemble at the Royal Overseas League competition.

They also have recently appeared live on BBC Radio 3's In Tune programme.

Roberts' personal achievements include playing with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Hall and at Milton Court, and performances across the UK, including Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G at the Capitol Theatre with the Horsham Symphony Orchestra.

Tickets for the concert on Sunday January 7 are available from the Theatre by the Lake box office.
