Squeals of joy greeted the news that a mum had scooped an iPad – for just 26p.

Sharon Taylor, 42, of St Andrew’s Road, Stainburn, was the lowest unique bidder in the News & Star’s Win an iPad competition.

Readers were invited to text in their bids for a new 16GB third-generation iPad, with the lowest unique bid taking the price.

Miss Taylor, a mid-day assistant, was shocked to discover that she had won the £400 prize for a guess of just 26p.

“We were at my mum’s and she said I should have a go,” she recalled.

“I only texted about six times!”

Miss Taylor had been shopping in Morrison’s with her mum when she received the call to say she had won – and immediately had to tell her seven-year-old son Adam Baxter the good news.

She said: “He was with his grandad, so I rang him and you could hear the squeals and shrieks down the phone.

“He wanted a computer and we were looking at a laptop, but now we have won this we don’t need to bother.

“You don’t think anybody wins these,” she added. “I’m really chuffed and never expected it.”

Adam came with his mum to collect the prize – claiming it was the perfect belated birthday present.
