Vickerstown triumph to end Dalton’s winning run

VICKERSTOWN brought an end to North Lancs Division one leaders Dalton’s unbeaten run with victory at Ulverston Road.

At tea, the visitors had posted a total of 136 for 9, with Sam Beckman top-scoring with 27. An important last-wicket stand between M Gibson, 18 not out, and Rob Lauderdale, 14 not out, gave the Vickerstown attack something to bowl at.

Dalton made a bad start and, with only Jon Bell, 32, and Jordan Woodend, 18, getting into double figures, the Division One leaders were all out for 90. Vickerstown skipper, Gareth Benson took 3 for 24 in a fine win.

Ulverston batted first at home to Egremont and could only total 115, despite 45 from Ben Dryden. For Egremont Matt Sempill took 4 for 22 and Dave Raynor 3 for 39.

Egremont went to their first win of the season at 116 for 5.

At Hawcoat Park, Seascale went in first and made 200.

In reply, Hawcoat Park made a good effort but just fell short at 183 for 6, Chris McLean making 69. Danny Lee took 5 for 45.

Wigton were always in trouble against the Penrith II attack. Despite Nick Watt’s 47 not out, they were all out for a meagre 91. Matthew Clark returned 6 for 32 including a hat-trick, and Robbie White 3 for 22.

Penrith also found it an odd track to bat on, and just managed the win at 92 for 9, Wigton’s Glen Liddle taking 6 for 32.

The Workington II v Cleator II could hardly have been more exciting.

Workington made 166 for 9 in their 50 overs, with top-scorers Dave Pearce, 39, and Ian Batty, 37. Mark Ponticelli took 4 for 51 in 15 overs.

In reply, after losing two early wickets, Cleator’s James Hocking, 30, and Gary Hall, 27, steadied the innings, but the middle order collapsed, and it took Adam Hodgson, batting at number nine, to make 44 and give his side a winning chance.

But with one over left, nine wickets down and six runs needed, Cleator skipper Alan Wishart was run out and Workington were winners by five runs. Workington’s Paul McKeown took 4 for 15 off 10 overs.

Appleby Eden took first knock at home to Lanercost and –mainly due to Max Winder’s 81 – were all out for 152.

The Lanercost batting was put to the sword by Scott Clement, who took 5 for 18, and were all out for 78.

In the Premier Division, Lindal Moor had to battle hard to get a defendable total on the board after losing a wicket to the first ball of the game at Haverigg.

But with 38 from Chris Brookshaw, 35 from Mark Armistead, and 29 from Jordan Hughes, they were all out for 150 in 45 overs. Jordan Postlethwaite, with 5 for 45, and professional Brenton Parchment, with 3 for 34, did the business for Haverigg.

In reply, a second-wicket partnership between Parchment, 83, and Steve Chapman, 50 not out, put Haverigg in control and the Poolsiders went to the win at 154 for 3.

For Lindal Moor, Jack Cumberbatch again impressed with the ball, taking 3 for 23 in 14 overs.

Home side Cockermouth could not cope with the Millom attack and, despite Gareth White’s 63 were all back in the shed for 117 after batting first.

Geeth Alwis finished with 5 for 17 off 14 overs, Simon Bickerstaffe 2 for 22 off 15 overs and Graham Dawson 2 for 42 off 12 overs.

In reply, Millom went to the win at 118 for 4, Danny Mackie scoring 48.

Kirkby batted first at Keswick and had a moderate day with the bat as they were all out for 124, of which Paul Fugler made 39.

Keswick professional Geeth Kumara returned 4 for 25 with the ball.

Keswick also struggled when it came their turn to bat, but Kumara’s 65 not out saw the Fitz Park side go to 126 for 7 for the winning points.

For the second successive Saturday, Penrith’s ground was waterlogged and Furness did not travel.

At Carlisle, Alex Raybould’s 5 for 33 saw Whitehaven dismissed for 107.

In reply, Carlisle also struggled, but with professional Saliya Saman making 46, the Edensiders picked up winning points at 109 for 6.

Visitors Workington went in first at Cleator and were never comfortable against the home team’s attack as they stumbled to 136 for 8, with Dave Bell returning 4 for 47.

In reply, despite 55 from overseas amateur Shaheen Khan, Cleator were reduced to 80 for 5, but Scott Kiggins, 38 not out, saw Cleator to the win at 140 for 5.
