Two air ambulances called after elderly cyclists crash

Two pensioners were badly hurt and airlifted to hospital after the bicycles they were riding were involved in a collision.

One of the men, from Whitehaven, was flown to the West Cumberland Hospital with a fractured hip following the crash at Portinscale, near Keswick, on the A66.

The other, from Keswick, was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with head injuries.

His condition today was said to be stable.

Both men are 73, said police. The crash happened at about 4pm yesterday.

Details of how the collision happened had not emerged today.
