Protesters opposed to Cumbria being considered as a location for an underground nuclear waste store will take their fight to the streets this Saturday.

Objectors will don white boiler suits to perform street theatre around Ambleside to highlight the issue.

Allerdale, Copeland and Cumbria County Council have all volunteered to be part of a Government process to find a suitable site to bury high-level waste.

The Government says the plan is the only viable way to deal with Britain’s nuclear legacy, most of which is stored at Sellafield.

A repository in west Cumbria would bring billions of pounds of investment to the area, create new jobs and attract a package of Government benefits.

But people campaigning against the idea say that the area’s geology is unsuitable and a repository would harm west Cumbria’s economy. A public consultation on the issue is under way and closes next Friday.

Saturday’s protest is being held in conjuction with campaign groups Save our Lake District (SOLD) and Cumbria CND.A spokeswoman said: “The protest will involve a large number of people taking to the streets of Ambleside.“Dressed in white chemical overalls, we hope to infiltrate the village, highlighting the urgent need for as many people as possible to save Cumbria from nuclear dumping.”
