THE resurgence of Moresby Rugby Union club continues and next Saturday culminates in an appearance in the final of the Cumbria Shield. Moresby succeeded in winning their league and will meet the winners of the other group, Cockermouth, in the final at Netherhall on Saturday (May 5) kick off 3pm.
The Moresby team were reformed this year after sadly folding two seasons ago and currently train twice a week. They have won the majority of their 22 fixtures this season and the squad has grown to over thirty playing members.
Coaches, Roly Rowell and Rae Tomlinson commented “in many ways the final is a bonus, the real success is the development both individually and as a team that we have seen this season.”
The very young team, ten of whom played for the successful Moresby youth team about ten years ago, is supplemented with some older club stalwarts notably Trevor Brown, Brendan Savage and Lee Richardson. Team spirit is high and the players are eagerly looking forward to next Saturday’s final.
The team has grown in confidence and now play some excellent flowing rugby with the backs scoring a number of spectacular tries.
The reappearance of the village rugby team has been well received in rugby circles and the club hope to continue its long history of a village rugby that commenced in 1924.
