To Hull and back – but picking up a trophy

EGREMONT’S young squash hopeful, 16-year-old Jessica Winder (now ranked No 8 nationally) travelled to Hull recently to take part in The Allam Humber Junior Open.

Being an England Squash Silver event, the top players from the north of England were present.

Jess was No2 seed for the event and a tricky first round against Lancashire “lass” Chloe Harrison (No 23) saw Jess lose the first game, before getting into her stride and win the next games and the match 3-1.

Now through to the semi-final she faced Northumbria’s Maria Bainbridge (No14), a tough first game saw Jess clinch it 13-11, that seemed to sap all her opposition’s resistance and Jess won the following two games easily to win 3-0, and make the final.

Already in the final after a shock result, was Mari Taylor from Leicstershire, victor over the No1 seed, Warwickshire’s Lucy Pallet.

Jessica made a good start, and won the first game 11-5.

This was to be story of the match as Jess dominated the final winning the next two games 11-6 11-1, for a 3-0 victory to become The Allam Humber Junior Open Under 17 girls Champion.
