Steve takes on elite course

WEST Cumberland orienteers travelled to central Scotland to take part in the Original Mountain Marath-on based around Perthshire.

Steve Birkinshaw took fourth place on the 80km elite course, just 10 minutes down after 11 hours, six minutes and 32 seconds over the two days.

John Noblett and Andy Lewsley were third overall, and first placed vets, on the 45km C course, taking 10:29.40.

Fellow club members Kevin Hodgson and Mike Harrison were close behind in fourth with 10:47.45.

Kim Collison ran the long score course, collecting as many controls as possible in a total time of 13 hours, and ended up with 600 points and just a fraction slower than the leading team.

Alan Irving, also on the long score took fourth place with a total of 560 points. Chris Naylor won the medium score with a total of 518 points in 11.14.17.

The short score class saw husband and wife team of Susan and Martin Skinner amassing 290 points in 8.46.04 to take third place.

In much more pleasant conditions at Peebles, the Tinto Twin attracted orienteers for the first night event of the season, combining it with a second event in the daylight the following day.

Margaret Mackenzie took the W50 trophy, defending it from 2010.

Lewis Taylor won the M20 title after two strong runs in Altarstone Forest.

Roger Jackson had a win in M60 on the night course, which was perfect preparation for the WCOC night series. Margo Pennell was second placed W70 after two very tough courses.
