Steep climbs prove uphill challenge for orienteers
Published at 11:09, Thursday, 28 June 2012
TOUGH racing conditions with loads of climb kept West Cumberland orienteers working hard at the Holme Wood evening event last week.
Todd Oates very much set the pace on the 5.3km long course which ascended onto the side of Burnbank Fell, with a four minute lead over second placed David Spencer.
Margaret Mackenzie was first lady less than a minute clear of Kate Charles.
The steep forest provided many navigational challenges with route choice an important factor to maintain a good pace.
On the 3.1km short course Lynne Thomas took the win from Susan Jackson who has recently returned home from New Zealand.
Twelve year old Daniel Spencer continues to show strong performances in his first year in the sport with a great fourth place just ahead of Katie Lowles.
Rosie Spencer had a clean run on the 2.4km easy course to record another win in the summer series.
Various delightful venues await as the series continues into July and August.

The club will be hosting an urban event around the streets of Cockermouth on Saturday, July 7, with details on the website.
