Seascale will host major golf championship

THE best amateur golfers in the country are set to compete for a prestigious championship at Seascale next month.
Seascale Golf Club is one of the co-hosts, along with Silloth-on-Solway, of the 2012 English Amateur Golf Championships under the auspices of the English Golf Union.
More than 280 of the UK’s top amateur players will do battle on Seascale’s links course on July 30 and 31.
After two days’ practice, the format for the first two days is a 36-Hole Stroke Play, played over both courses. The lowest 64 scores then progress to the matchplay knockout at Silloth.
Every match of each round consists of 18 holes, except the final, which will be played over 36 holes at Silloth on August 4.
A spokesperson from Seascale Golf Club said: “This is a great opportunity to get up close to see true golfing talent pitted against a fine traditional course maintained to the very best standard.
“Seascale Golf Club extends a warm welcome to all who wish to witness this golfing spectacle.”
Admission is free. For more information contact the club on 019467 28202 or seascalegolfclub@googlemail.com.
The groundsmen have been busy getting the course ready, led by head greenkeeper, Ron Brown. He has been with the club for over 35 years and has been keen to see this major event come to his course.
Acting head greenkeeper, John Whitham, says a lot of work has gone on over the last year to put in new tees, refurbishing bunkers and generally improving the course.
Steven Youngs has been with the club for around 10 years, and Alec Hennis for about five years.
