Popular Gosforth 10-mile event sees some notable performances
Published at 11:11, Thursday, 21 June 2012
KESWICK AC’s Ian Davies went one better than his second place in last year’s Gosforth 10K to seal victory in the AMEC Sponsored Gosforth 10 mile road race.
Ian and Blengdale Runners Marc Penn had established an early lead from the rest of the pack as they reached the one mile mark, with Ian stretching ahead to finish in 56:59 and Marc second in 58:57.
Third place went to Steve Storey (64:16) from the Yorkshire based Penistone AC. Steve was visiting the area and hadn’t realised there was a race on until he saw someone putting out mile markers earlier in the day.
Other notable performances in the wet conditions came from Derwent AC’s Tony Davis (64:51) who was 1st Vet 50, Mike Martin 1st Vet 60 (74.55), Malcolm Savage 1st Vet 65 (74.50) and Blengdale’s own Larry Abel (71.14) competing in his last Gosforth 10 before moving to Australia with expectant wife Mel.
Keswick AC also claimed first and second places in the ladies race with Sam Ayers (69:07) ahead of team mate Hazel Davies (70:26). Third lady was the much improving Viv Winter in a PB of 72:36.
The team prizes (teams of 4) went to the Cumberland AC men and the Keswick AC ladies.
Event organisers Blengdale Runners AC also held the annual Fun Run which was well supported by a field of 99 runners of all ages. Tom Wright (U16) was first making a hat trick of wins, with Allard Newell (U16) in second and Cerys Atkinson (U16) third (first female). Cerys also retained her title from last year. This is a big month for Tom who has been selected to carry the Olympic Torch during its relay route through Ambleside.
The race organisers would like to thank all the runners, everyone who helped on the night and also the race main sponsors AMEC, plus the Lion and Lamb (race HQ), Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (tail vehicle and water stations), Ian Cripps (lead vehicle), Gosforth First Responders, Alan R Grey and Associates, Riverside Garage Holmrook, Richard Kirkham and the Builder Centre.
All proceeds from the race and the Gosforth 10K (4th September 2012, 6.30pm) will be donated to local charities and good causes. Entries for the 10K are now being taken online, details at www.blengdalerunners.co.uk for link or entry form.
