Orienteers fight out parish relays around High Nook Tarn

TEAMS of West Cumberland orienteers battled for supremacy at the Parish Relays around High Nook Tarn close to Loweswater last week.

Andrew Bradley, Chris Brand-Barker and Callum Pearson completed the seven legs of the relay in the fastest time to take the trophy.

Second placed team of Steven Breeze, Paul Jennings and Jeff Goodwin actually had the favoured podium place since the winning team have the pleasure of planning the event next year.

Six teams contested the junior competition, with seven much shorter courses to complete.

Alex Chaudhri, Solomon White and Philip Jennings took the honours and the trophy with a fine win.

Ben & Jess Breeze and Ben Goodwin were the second placed team.

High Nook Tarn provided quite a distraction with a control point on a small island giving many runners wet feet as they attempted to reach the control.

The competition produced some fast racing with the changeover seeing several teams returning at the same time.

The outgoing runners struggled to get their maps sorted as they could be running any of six different courses, and heading off in any direction.

Having to execute a 180 turnabout in full view was very embarrassing.

The summer series continues with great venues throughout West Cumbria; details can be found on the website www.wcoc.co.uk

An easy course is always available for those moving up from the school events.
