WEST Cumberland orienteer, Mhairi Mackenzie, was representing Scotland at the Senior Home Internationals held last weekend at Merthyr Tidfal in South Wales.
Racing against the top W21 elites Mackenzie secured a strong second placing in the individual competition, just a couple of minutes behind fellow Scot, Hollie Orr.
In the relay competition Mackenzie was selected to provide firepower on the anchor leg for the second team.
After two laps of the relay the Scotland teams were leading with 30-seconds separating them.
Mackenzie set off with this small time deficit and soon overhauled the leading runner, eventually crossing the line with an almost three minute winning margin.
With outstanding performances from the youthful Scottish team the overall trophy went to Scotland.
The West Cumberland club held their annual general meeting last week, appreciation was expressed to dedicated committee members.
The work with school’s orienteering has provided an impressive number of juniors joining the mainstream sport, with many developing into outstanding athletes.
The committee reported that the club would be heavily involved with staging the British Championships in May 2012 in the Eskdale valley on some of the best terrain in the country.
Early November will see the start of the winter night series, held every Thursday evening on venues throughout West Cumbria.
These popular events offer the exciting challenge of finding your way over unfamiliar terrain in the dark.
Several courses are offered for the various abilities and ages of the competitors.
