TREMENDOUS performances from the junior and senior ladies teams secured podium placings at the Jan Kjellstrom Relay competition at the weekend.
The three day orienteering festival attracted three thousand competitors with a large number travelling from Scandinavia.
Mhairi Mackenzie, Helen Winskill and Charlotte Watson ran in the premier ladies relay, taking the silver medal.
The same team are currently holders of the British Relay trophy and they were keen to secure the JK Relay trophy as well.
But a strong team from Edinburgh University just kept them at bay, and after 15km over the three legs through the tough terrain at Newtyle near Dunkeld had a two minute winning margin.
The junior ladies team of Katrina Hemingway, Heather Wornham and Rosie Watson also took the silver medal in their relay after a superb set of performances.
The JK festival was held over four days, with sprint, middle, classic and relay disciplines to test the runners.
The very large entry for the event made it especially difficult to achieve a top 10 placing, but quite a few West Cumberland orienteers made it.
Charlotte Watson stormed through all the races taking the win in each with some very significant margins.
Watson won the sprint in Livingstone in 17 minutes and 43 seconds, a good 42 seconds clear.
Other top 10 placings went to Michael Billinghurst (6th in sprint and 10th in classic), Alan Irving (6th in sprint), Rosie Watson (7th in sprint and 5th in classic), Katrina Hemingway (5th in classic), Susan Skinner (8th in classic), Lewis Taylor (8th in sprint).
A cold clear evening greeted the runners as Howard Seal claimed his first victory of the series on the long course, posting a time of 60.33. A fine run by Mike Harrison saw him take second place in 62.05. Angela Jackson once again led the ladies home in 78.54.
Rob James secured the short course title with a fine fourth victory in 53.48. Jenny Wren also finished under the hour in 59.37 to finish first woman and second overall.
