Isaac battles to win

WEST Cumberland Orienteers were all over Whoap Fell near Ennerdale for their race last week.
Tough terrain with great navigational challenges spread the field out, but allowed Lewis Taylor to turn up trumps and secure a win and a fast time of just short of 43 minutes for the 6.3km long course.
With a newly surveyed map by Pete Nelson, this gave the orienteers their first opportunity to race over the area, with planner Margaret Mackenzie setting up the courses.
Taylor and second-placed David Spencer have had a great tussle this season on the long course, with Taylor currently holding the lead in the league.
The various venues in the summer series have provided a different challenge each week, allowing Taylor to demonstrate his skills.
First lady on the long was Angela Jackson only just ahead of Kate Charles and Hannah Bradley. On the short course, Michael Pearson won, with 12-year-old Alastair Thomas second, less than a minute ahead of his Dad, Roger. Heather Wornham had a good run to come in fourth.
Five-year-old Isaac Hunter battled round the very rough tracks of the easy course to secure a win with a very impressive time, over six minutes clear of second-placed Rosie Spencer.
The summer series continues throughout August with just a few events left, before the start of the autumn Park Races.
Details of all the events are on www.wcoc.co.uk and 01768 895539 close to each Thursday.
