Golfing marras honour Macca’s memory

OVER 100 competitors competed for ‘Macca’s Cup’ on Friday, those towards the end of the field suffering due to the heavy afternoon rain.
The competition was started five years ago by his ‘marras’ in memory of Ian (Macca) MacDonald – a much-liked and respected Seascale golfer, who passed away much too soon at the age of 51 – and is always keenly contested by the teams of four who participate in this charity event.
It’s an interesting format with Stableford scores of the best two in the team counting at par fours, the best three at par threes, and all of the team at par fives.
First place this year with a total of 114 Stableford points went to the team of Sam Bailey (24), Brian Bailey (18), J Brocklebank (21) and G Cowen (18). And how fitting it was that one of Macca’s pals should win and have a double celebration, because Sam also had his 50th birthday on the day.
There was a two-way tie on 112 points for second place, and with 55 points back this was taken by the team of Wayne Powell (9), Paul Edwards (9), Gary Wise (18) and K Ennis (12). Third with a back nine of 53 points were I Bragg (18), Geoff Prince (19), Mel Walker (9) and Dave Watson (6).
The weather was much improved for Sunday’s Ernest Anderson Trophy played from the longer blue tees, nevertheless there was a troublesome wind for the morning contestants, and with a Competition Standard Scratch (CSS) of 73 it was clear that most of the field found it hard going. Dispelling any concern about wind, however, it was a familiar name on the top of the leader board, as Mark Lightfoot stamped his mark on the trophy with an emphatic win carding a net 64, and saw his handicap tumble by two strokes down to 10.
Mark was also in the money with his eagle two at the 391 yard 9th hole – against the wind using a wood for his second shot, the golfing gods were certainly with him. Dale Hodgson reinforced his return to form with a fine 71 net 68 to take lowest gross and second place, with David Walker taking third place from Jake Conoley after count-back on their net 68’s.
Results:
1 Mark Lightfoot 76 gross(12 hcp) net 64, 2 Dale Hodgson 71(3)68 – better back nine – lowest gross, 3 David Walker 88(20)68 – better back nine, 4 Jake Conoley 76(8)68, 5 Mark Richardson 75(6)69, 6 Billy Curwen 82(12)70 – better back nine, 7 David Pierce 87(17)70 – better back nine, 8 Alan Mawdsley 81(11)70 – better back nine, 9 Paul Barry 74(4)70.
THE Wednesday Stableford was a keenly contested competition, Howard Stewart returning a fine score of 42 points to win in Division Two, ahead of Graham Goulding in second place on 40 points, and Richard Taylor on the button again with 36 points in third place.
Iain Copeland shot two birdies at the 8th and the 10th, but just couldn’t keep the round going. Others scoring two’s were: Bert Shuttleworth, James Connor, Alex Johnstone, Alan Jardine, Brian Bailey, Brian Maguire, Harry Paterson, Greg Fitzwilliam and Graeme Wilson.
In Division Three S Dawson had a good day, carding 41 points to win the category, followed by David McCrum with 40 points and Tony Miller on 39 points.
The top of Division One was very tight with three players on 39 points. Micky Benn took first place on the count-back from Scott Mahaffy, whose effective gross of 68 put him again well below scratch, and Dave Watson was close again in third place.
Results:
Division one (9 hcp and below) 1 Michael Benn (6) 39 points – better last nine, 2 Scott Mahaffy (Scratch) 39 points – better last nine, 3 Dave Watson (5) 39 points.
