Galloping over the Cumbrian Galoppen series

THE fourth event in the 2012 Cumbrian Galoppen series attracted over 300 orienteers to the Bigland Estate in South Lakeland.

Lewis Taylor just missed the win on the premier brown course with a strong run through the rough, hilly terrain.

Michael Billinghurst was the second placed WCOC runner in 11th, having a day off from the planning for the British Championships to be held in Eskdale in early May.

Phil Winskill took fourth place on blue, three minutes ahead of wife Helen in seventh, with daughter Isabel on the white course.

Twelve-year-old Alastair Thomas had a very strong run on green coming in seventh from a field on just short of a hundred runners.

Quite a few club members travel to Perthshire in Scotland for the Jan Kjellstrom orienteering festival over the Easter weekend.

The event has attracted over 2,000 competitors and will provide top class orienteering on some of the best terrain in the country.

MORE Spring sunshine and an hours more daylight helped the 34 runners enjoy the first longer race in the series.

Back at Loweswater for a second week but over different courses, competitors raced around Mosedale visiting checkpoints on the slopes of Melbreak and Hen Combe.

Another close battle on the long course saw Ambleside’s Todd Oates register his second victory in two weeks, this time with Howard Seal of CFR in second.

Todd’s time was 52:15; Howard posted 52:21. Yet another of the talented Elbra juniors – 16 year old Sam Johnston – finished third in 52:41: a mightily impressive performance. First WCOC runner home was 19 year old Lewis Taylor, fifth in 55:22. First lady was Keswick AC’s Angela Wakefield in 73:14.

Twelve-year-old Alastair Thomas of WCOC took a well-deserved first victory on the short course in 61:25. Second – also of WCOC – was Paul Tickner in 62:24. Alastair’s dad, Roger was third in 63:19. To complete a fine family night out, Alastair’s mum Lynne was first lady in 69:03.
