Frantic finale as snooker players battle it out for promotion place

THE final week of the Eddie Shimmings Individual Snooker Championships has been completed in a frantic finale to decide this season’s promotion places in division one.

It was a four-way battle from the start of the week including two top four position-defining clashes.

Workington’s Clive Lister who recently resurfaced to the top of the table finally claimed the title with two hard fought 3-2 victories against his immediate rivals for the crown. Lister first having to stem the challenge of Clifton’s Richard Nelson who got off to the perfect start as the Queen’s Head cueist took a comfortable opening frame with the help of a 31 break.

Lister, unfazed by this levelled the match with an equally convincing frame two. A determined Nelson regained the lead with a solid third with Lister matching that in the fourth to level the scores once again and in a nail-biting decider Lister was able snatch the vital victory by just nine points. Nelson ended his campaign in fourth by just one point from Whitehaven’s Ryan Henry who was third.

Lister ensured he took the title by four points as he also snuffed out the challenge of Henry in his second fixture in equally difficult circumstances. In a tight match throughout Henry found himself 2-0 to the good before Lister was able to make an impression on the match. However Lister’s never-say-die attitude ensured the United Club potter was able to reel off three frames on the bounce to overturn Henry’s strong lead, Lister closing the match out with a break of 32.

With the title secured by Lister only Andrew Mitchelhill of Harrington could snatch the second promotion slot away from Henry. Mitchelhill who had been in good form over the past few weeks continued in the same vein as he whitewashed Cleator Moor’s Michael Walker 5-0 despite close fought opening and third frames. This left Mitchelhill requiring a win against Maryport’s Shaun Moore. Mitchelhill duly notched up four comfortable frames but could not repeat back to back whitewashes as Moore took a close fought final frame for consolation. Mitchelhill ends his campaign in second to book his place in the top flight next winter.

The remaining tie saw Walker avenge his whitewash defeat by inflicting the same result on Moore, Walker ending the match with a 31 break in the fifth. Walker ends in sixth place.

Meanwhile in the premiership the final two fixtures were completed as a formality with all the places decided. Workington’s Ryan Adams had a tough trip to Maryport Social to take on Ryan Ismay whereby five competitive frames ensued. With honours even going into frame three after Adams had taken an early lead, it was the Workington Cons player who was able to re-establish his advantage and then kick on to guarantee the win bonus at 3-1 before Ismay claimed the final frame for a more respectable 3-2 reversal. Adams finishing in third with Ismay fifth.

With the premiership title already wrapped up this did not dampen the competitive edge to the clash between new champion Peter O’Hagan of Workington and assured runner-up Vito Shipley of Whitehaven. A frame winning break of 65 in the opening frame seemed a fitting start for the new title holder but a determined Shipley levelled the match with a 32 break. Shipley then went into the lead and secured the win with two similar score-lines in frames three and four but was not finished as the Marchon craftsman made a further break of 34 to close the match out 4-1 to inflict O’Hagan’s only defeat of the season.
