Boxing’s box office smash

WHITEHAVEN & District ABC’s biggest ever show tonight (Thursday) is closing in on a sellout after some impressive late selling.
Organisers were concerned after 100 tickets were last month returned en bloc for the show, which will launch the H-Fest live music weekend, in a giant marquee on Hensingham RL pitch.
But most of the 500 tickets for the event have now been snapped up, much to the delight of Whitehaven boxing coach Tim Savage.
He said: “The public response has been fantastic, after what happened with the tickets. But we have pulled through with what will definitely be the biggest crowd we have ever had, so it will be our biggest and hopefully our best show.
“We have six of our own boxers all in good bouts and looking to make their mark. They are very excited about the event and just want to put on a good show.”
Former world champion John H Stracey will take part in a question and answer session before the first of 16 bouts, which will double as an England versus Scotland Select clash. An auction of sporting memorabilia will also be held mid-way through the night.
A limited number of tickets are still available and can be purchased tonight or by contacting Savage.
He said: “We are asking those who already have tickets to come as soon as the doors open at 6.30pm, as we plan to have Stracey on before the first bout at around 7pm.
“We have a good card and I am sure the public won’t get such value for money anywhere else, and all for £10. You simply can’t beat it.”
