YOUNG sports stars of 1953 have been identified by a Whitehaven News reader.
We published this photograph of Crosthwaite School football team a couple of weeks ago; it was submitted by Brian Telford (pictured holding the ball).
Since then John Lowrey, of Whitehaven, (front, second from left) has been in touch to give us all of the names of his team mates.
Front row (from left): Brian Wilson, John Lowrey, Brian Telford, Billy Armstrong, Johnny Hilton. Back row: Billy Atkinson, Stan Telford, Eddie Truett, John McVeigh, Harold Hutchinson, Michael Toman. Standing are the teachers Mr Inglesfield and Mr Paris.
John tells us that John ‘Tracky’ McVeigh later went on to play for Haven, playing in the famous victory over the Kiwis in 1965. Mr McVeigh later emigrated to Australia where sadly he died a couple of years ago.
Brian Telford (who was born in Whitehaven and now lives in Kendal) and all the team, went to Crosthwaite Memorial School, on Rosemary Lonning.
