Martial arts available

A WIDE range of martial arts are available to learn at Egremont Freestyle Karate Club.
From traditional karate and kung-fu, to jujitsu and Thai boxing, trainer Trevor Mossop offers children from as young as six the chance to learn their craft.
“Teaching freestyle takes each individual person on a journey,” says Trevor, a second dan, who has trained people at the club for over 10 years.
“They learn a range of techniques, concentrating on the fundamentals, and as they blossom in certain aspects, they can adapt and use the techniques to get the best out of their ability.”
From training in the basics, of blocks, straightforward punches and kicks, and self-defence, the young members of the club are graded as they master each difficulty level.
“Sticking to a syllabus and working towards each recognised grade gives them something to aim towards and a real sense of achievement when they complete each section,” says Trevor.
“The first number of grades are done standing still, performing the more basic moves in front of instructors.
“As they progress, they learn more advanced techniques while always staying on their toes and bouncing back and forth.
“They learn how to perform moves from different angles, and how to join everything they have learned together to produce flowing combinations.”
As well as the gradings, there is also the opportunity to compete against other martial artists, but only after they are well prepared for competition fighting.
And, according to Trevor, the advantages of learning karate are numerous.
“It keeps people fit, active and gives them something productive to focus on.
“But as well as that, it gives people confidence and the interaction with people who have similar interests can bring young people out of their shell.”
The club meets every Tuesday and Friday, 5pm to 6.15pm, in Egremont Market Hall. It costs £3.50 for juniors and £4 for adults, and the first lesson comes free.
Comfortable clothing (T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms) is all that is needed and the training is carried out barefoot.
