Soaraway Celtic eclipse Red Star in thrilling top-of-the-table encounter
Last updated at 12:53, Thursday, 26 April 2012
THIS was a top-of-the-table clash between two good football teams - CM Celtic U10s v Workington Red Star.
Red Star played with a strong wind at their backs in the first half and used it well. On the small under 10s pitch, Aaron Carter in the Red Star goal was able to ‘bomb’ the Celtic goal creating lots of problems for the Celtic defence.
One of his kicks forced a corner that resulted in the first goal. In a crowded goal mouth, Shane Roe was given a free header that back post. With so many players in the box, the Celtic keeper was behind his line when he made the save but the referee was perfectly placed to award the goal.
Celtic nearly leveled the scores but a super Owen Woods strike brought out a tremendous save from Carter. More Celtic pressure resulted in a Red Star own goal to make it 1-1.
As Celtic pushed forward, a long clearance gave Red Star’s Owen Mandale a run down the wing. Before he could be closed down and from long range Mandale hit an absolute beauty into the roof of the Celtic net.
This was a very quick response and gave Red Star a 2-1 lead. It looked like this might be the half time score until Owen Woods won a ball in the tackle. Running from mid field, Woods fired in the equalizer to make it 2-2 at the break.
Now with the wind at their backs Celtic were able to pin Red Star back for long periods. Under pressure from Woods, Red Star conceded another own goal. Celtic went further ahead when Elliot Todd found Reuben Butterworth in the Red Star box. Taking a touch, Butterworth turned and volleyed the ball into the Red Star net.
At 4-2 up Celtic were stung when Roe ran the length of the field to send a pin point cross to the back post where Logan Smith hit a ‘first timer’ that was unstoppable.
Now back to just 3-4 down Red Star were knocking long balls for Smith to chase out wide. Celtic covered this using Ben Casson to man mark the Red Star flyer.
Celtic had a chance to extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty for hand ball. Woods hit the ball well but Carter made a great save. At the other end Celtic’s keeper Karl Garner had to be just as good pushing away a goal bound Red Star free kick with a great save. Celtic got the final goal of the game when Casson picked up a loose ball and rifled it into the Red Star net to give Celtic a 5-3 win.
Two very industrious mid fielders picked up the MoMs: for Celtic, Owen Woods, and for Red Star, Shane Roe.
U10s: Dearham v CM Celtic
A STILL unbeaten Celtic side were fast asleep when the first Dearham goal went in with all of 30 seconds on the clock.
From the kick of Dearham got in an early Kia Frazer strike that went in through the keepers legs. Things went from bad to worse for the league leaders from the restart.
Within a minute a ball fell to Frazer and from a long way out he lobed the Celtic keeper with a lovely clean strike.
At 2-0 down with only a few minutes of the game played Celtic were in trouble.
The score stayed at 2-0 for most of the first half with Dearham battling well against a Celtic team that were starting to threaten. Just on the stroke of half time Celtic pulled one back with a super Owen Woods strike.
Having a fine game and always looking dangerous, when the ball fell to Woods well outside the box but unmarked he set it up with his right and hit a cracker into the top of the net with his left.
Going in 2-1 down at half time, this late Woods goal gave Celtic the lift they needed to push on at the restart.
Now looking the stronger team and with Woods in sparkling form it was not long before they equalized. A Woods ball from midfield gave winger Owen Bell a run to the byeline.
Looking like a lost cause, the ball stopped on the by-eline in the wet grass. Bell maintained his run and hit a hard and low cross into the Dearham goalmouth.
In the crowded area, Ben Casson got an unstoppable shot off at close range to level the scores at 2-2.
By now Dearham were having to defend for all they were worth. Any balls they did get into the Celtic half were quickly returned by Lewis Durham and Joe Martin who were solid this half.
It was from one such clearance that Celtic got the winner. With Celtic on the attack, Durham and Martin had pushed up into the centre circle. When a ball was cleared only as far as Martin he hit a high volley that dropped just short of the keeper who was undone by the bounce.
Now 3-2 up Celtic were happy to hear the full time whistle, just hanging on to their unbeaten run. Dearham’s MoM was judged to be Lewis Manchester who tackled tirelessly all game.
For Celtic Joe Martin showed some great touches but an Owen Woods ‘master class’ got the vote.
Owen Woods was the Celtic MoM.
U11s: CM Celtic B v Cockermouth
PLAYED on the Astro turf at St Benedict’s both teams created chances in the first half but only Cockermouth could take one.
A smart run down the wing and a cross behind the Celtic defence gave them a tap in at the back post. Celtic had at least three good chances to score but were unable to take any.
The score was 1-0 to Cockermouth at half time.
Celtic had played as well as they could in the first half holding a good Cockermouth team but it was all change in the second half.
Cockermouth won the ball in a tackle the pass enabling a free strike and a good goal. They added another when Celtic failed to clear a corner, gifting a free ball at the back post that was driven home.
By now 3-0 up Cockermouth were looking stronger adding another five goals without reply to win the match 8-0. The best goal of the game was a Mathew Bryden headed corner, one of three that Bryden got as well as being voted MoM.
Ryan Cruden had another good game in goals for Celtic making some great saves but it was a Lissy Close save that caught the eye. Bryden had picked the ball up behind the Celtic mid field and ran at Close.
He got past her but had been pushed wide and he was again pushed wide as he passed Robbie Murphy. Now one-on-one with Cruden in the Celtic goal he was pushed wider again as he passed the Celtic keeper who had ran out to meet him.
Now with an open goal from a wide position Briden hit a goal-bound shot that was cleared off the line by Lissy Close, quite spectacularly.
This effort and a good all round performance secured the MoM award for Lissy.
