Montreal girls show their strength to clinch tournament

ON Friday, February 24, 12 teams from seven local schools took part in a six-a-side tournament at Whitehaven AFC.
Jericho, Hensingham, Montreal, St Bees, Lamplugh, Valley and St Begh’s were the schools involved.
The schools were split into three groups of four, with the winners of each group going through to the semi-finals and the best placed runner-up team from the three groups made the other semi-finalists.
The standard of football from all the girls was very good considering this was the first time some of them had played in a football tournament.
The group winners were Montreal A, Hensingham A, St Begh’s A and Jericho B, who went through on goal difference as the best runner up.
Montreal beat Hensingham 2-0 in the first semi-final and St Begh’s beat Jericho 2-0 in the second semi-final.
The final was an entertaining game with both teams tiring after a long afternoon. Montreal were just that bit stronger than St Begh’s and went on to win the final 2-0 and claim the trophy, which was kindly donated by D Hooper of Dale’s Shoe Repairs, Roper Street, Whitehaven.
It is hoped to run a friendly tournament in the near future, to pick a Copeland District side to play in a tournament in May.
If you are interested you can contact Vic Stewart on 07835 737099 or Mr S Monaghan at Jericho School. They are looking for a squad of 10 girls.
