Luke captains Egremont under-8s to a narrow victory at Penrith

LAST Sunday saw Egremont RUFC youth squads travel to Penrith.

An enthusiastic group of under-8s made the journey and had the chance to compete under blue skies and unseasonably warm weather.

The home side lined up with two full squads, so Egremont were in for a busy morning. Luke Hamand took on the role of captain for the visitors and, as usual, his dazzling running was soon racking up the tries. However, Penrith were more than a match and it was all-square after the first game.

Following a short break, it was back to work and debut tries for Tom Walton and Lewis Gascoyne kept Egremont in contention.

Pressure from Penrith however forced Egremont into mistakes and turnover of possession, allowing the home side to take the win 18-17.

Egremont under-12s also travelled to Penrith on Sunday to play their fourth game of the season.

So far in their season they had defended very well and had conceded very few tries. Today was to be no different, where both backs and forwards combined to tackle extremely well.

The squad turned defence into attack throughout the game and scored some good tries, without conceding a single try. The support play on the day was certainly some of the best seen this season. The squad are off to Wigton next week.

This weekend, Egremont RUFC’s youth players were in action at Wigton.

Luke Jeremy was the player taking on the captain’s duties and his usual determination and pacey running mirrored the squad’s performance.

Egremont soon established control, turning over the home side several times and successfully converting this into points.

Having built a healthy lead, the tries kept coming from Egremont, including a pair for Charlie Jackson, his first for the team.

Wigton fought back in the second half but it was too late, the visitors taking the win with 17 tries to nine.
