Heartbreak in last kick of the game

A WHITEHAVEN school’s bid to be crowned national rugby league champions ended in heartache – after they lost with the last kick of the match.

St Benedict’s Year 11s were tied 14-all against Sirius Academy in the closing seconds of their final when the Hull school converted a penalty to snatch the Carnegie Champion Schools title.

The Cumbrians had been 12-0 up in the first-half and still led 12-6 at the break, at the home of Bradford Bulls, but they were let down by their second-half completion rate.

Coach Paul Farrell said: “I feel sorry for the lads, especially after their performance in the first 30 minutes. Our second-half defence was sound, but we had to defend too many sets in our own half, and on the last play of the game, that took its toll.”

Jordan Burns and Greg Howland crossed for St Benedict’s, Burns adding three goals.
