Preparing for the start of the new hound season

JENNY’S choice is the 6/1 favourite to give the Patterdale kennel of Denis Barrow, Denise and Jenny Bland a follow-up title in the HTA’s puppy championship.
Bookmaker Paul Garritty has noted the impressive early running of Jenny’s Choice in the practice trails he’s seen and has great respect for the kennel involved.
Paul has come-up with his pre-March trials odds with 22 youngsters quoted. Other prices can be obtained on request.
Since the prices appeared on the hound trailing website two pups have been significantly backed.
Joseph Abram’s Midnight Rambler has been trimmed from 20/1 to 8/1 and also in to 8/1 from 16/1 is James McLelland’s Tother Look.
There’s been a little nibble at Martin Burrows’ Debra, trimmed from 25/1 to 16/1.
The full list is: 6/1 Jenny’s Choice; 8/1 Midnight Rambler and Tother Look; 10/1 Izzabella and Aspire; 12/1 Cleverley and Willow Bay; 14/1 Prudence, Cracking Thorpe, Solar and Langdale Ranger; 16/1 Jazz Singer, Bedazzled, Debra, Blueboy and Celeste; 20/1 Grange Music, Flawless, Highness, Awesome, Eden Ellis and Cracking Mover; 25/1 Levitate and Thorn Music.
Paul also says that there has been money for Artisan in the senior championship and she’s been trimmed to 3/1 joint favourite with Dairy Diamond.
A bookmaker for 20 years, Paul covers the racecourses in the north of England which means he’s often missing from the trails on a Saturday.
“I think there are only seven or eight of us who try to get as often as possible to the trails but numbers are decreasing and that’s a big worry for the sport,” he says.
HTA secretary Margaret Baxter informs me that nine litters have been born so far, with a further nine expected.
The Enoch pups were earmarked on Monday. She was lined with the Border dog Gonzofast and on New Year’s Day produced nine pups – two dogs and seven bitches.
Margaret says she hopes to do the Bonny Lass and Sparrowmire Amy litters in the next few days. Bonny Lass was mated with former champion Westgate Kyza and pupped on January 6 – nine dogs and two bitches.
The same pairing last year produced the likes of Capetown, Shameless and Baroness so the two bitches might be worth keeping an eye on.
The pairing of Sparrowmire Amy and Jordan’s Dream produced five pups on January 4 – a dog and four bitches.
Others waiting to be earmarked are: Amber x Westgate Kyza – pupped 14th January, 7 dogs, 4 bitches; Waltzing Matilda x Miterdale One – pupped 21st January, 3 dogs, 5 bitches; Sparrowmire Judy x Huntsman’s Dazzler – pupped 8th February, 1 bitch; Pollyanna x Levi – pupped 8th February, 4 dogs, 2 bitches; White Diamond x Newman (BHTA) – pupped 3rd February, 8 dogs, 1 bitch; Jenny’s Pride x Huntsman’s Dazzler – pupped 10th February, 4 dogs, 6 bitches; Black Rose x Zeddicus – pupped 11th February, 7 dogs, 3 bitches.
That’s 80 pups so far and I gather there are another eight litters expected.
Meanwhile Margaret has indicated that micro-chipping might be forced onto the HTA.
She says: “The government proposal to have all dogs micro-chipped may well affect how we identify our trail-hounds. Tattooing produces a clear mark, easily seen by anybody without the need for an electronic reader, and I can quickly look up the details in the records. However, we may have to comply!”
The trial trail fixtures are now arranged, and several of the areas have held their first committee meetings.
There’s a reminder that adverts for the championship trails should be with the Secretary in plenty of time. Also, many green kennel forms are missing - please send these in as soon as possible. If you did not get a form, just send in the names of your hounds on a piece of paper.
Entries are coming in for the Team Competition – four hounds, with a team name and the name of the manager.
