Endeavour prepares to give big brother a run for his money

ALL eyes will be on the Dog Produce this weekend, not least because it is being staged on a Sunday for the first time.
Aspatria and Wigton are putting on the event at Ward Hall and they could be celebrating a home win!
For the Henderson family look to have a strong contender in Get Up, who earned his second championship win of the season on Saturday at Dean after finishing third at Oulton two days earlier.
There aren’t many young dogs who have shown winning form in the championship with bitches dominating as usual.
A son of Westgate Kyza and Dignity there’s plenty of class in the pedigree; the Henderson’s know how to have one ready for a big race and he looks the one to be on.
The danger might be a litter brother, Endeavour, trained by Keith Lynch and Darren McMaster. He won the puppy maiden at Dean on Saturday when Get Up was leading in the main puppy trail and he also ticketed there a few days earlier.
It should also be noted that Endeavour won his maiden in a time 50 seconds faster than the main puppy trail.
If they are free of injury and able to run Discard, Huntsman’s Hope, Huntsman’s Hero, Sental and Is He It could also be battling for the tickets.
The International meeting this year has now been fixed for June 30 at Swinside End, Lorton – a new course which has been used for trials before but has never staged a proper meeting. Entry forms are circulating.
The main meeting since our last column was Sunday’s fixture at Lazonby which had a fine but cold day for the Jubilee meeting, generously sponsored to the tune of £600.
The senior trail had a modest entry of ten, but it produced the easiest winner of the day when Victor Brownlee’s Mayflower strung out the field to record her third course win of the season. Langdale Jack just got his nose in front of White Diamond to claim second place.
In the puppy trail there was a very exciting finish, with Eden Rosa, owned by David Clifford and Michelle Addison, going into over-drive up the last field for her second success, ahead of Howgill Blondie, Cracking Moment and Canny Girl, who were closely grouped.
Malcolm and Ann Holmes have been rather out of luck this season, one way and another, so it was especially good to see them take the puppy maiden race with Shambles, who was nicely clear of Mayhem and Eden Rio.
Eden Rosa’s mother, Halloween, has always liked Lazonby. In the open maiden trail she went through the ling in second place, and was still in that position coming up the final stretch, but she just put in that extra effort to beat Hey Jude narrowly, with Meadow Kim in third.
This was another success for Malcolm Holmes, as he is co-owner with Margaret Baxter and Jan Tyson.
Jane and Patrick Laidler didn’t have to wait long for their turn in the winner’s enclosure, as Rose took the open restricted trail in a very good finish from Border River and Simply Rascal. This was a second Jubilee win for Rose, following on from her win at Oulton on Thursday.
The puppy show was judged by Harry Turner, and resulted in further glory for the Clifford, Addison and Potter partnership as their home-bred Sundown x Eden Russet dog and bitch pups took first places.
The prizes were presented by landowner John Harris, who always makes the hound people very welcome at Lazonby. Many thanks to him, and to the sponsors.
We start our look back at the week with last Wednesday’s meeting at Crag Farm when only four seniors were slipped in the opener.
Fallen Spring showed with the lead and went on confidently to win with a fair bit to spare from Sweet Peas with Cinnabar and Miterdale One, behind, but getting round.
There was more to pick from in the puppy trail with 25 taken to the slip. There was a fair bit of money for the Troutbeck bitch Baroness and she duly landed some nice punts in some style. Winning easily from Serenity, it was an impressive performance. Wistlo Spring took third place.
The night’s entertainment was completed by the open maidens and Grey Owl, who had been fancied beforehand, produced a nice turn of speed to come through and beat Waltzing Matilda with Miss Molly taking third.
They were certainly in the Jubilee spirit at Oulton on Thursday with gifts of key rings and free drink tokens while some of the ladies were resplendent in colourful wigs, and were dressed patriotically in red, white and blue.
Hello Dolly went joint top of the senior table when she won the opener, getting the better of Enoch after a sustained challenge. High Challenge was in third place.
Both Acacia and Chicharito have won over the terrain and they were the two who battled-out the finish of the puppy trail. It was close all the way before Artisan just edged away to win by a length. Hurry On finished third.
There were four in contention at the finish of the open restricted but Rose was the one who caught the eye, coming from third to grab the honours close home from Meadow Kim and Lady McShane.
Moving to Dean on Saturday there was an unfortunate incident of interference at the end of the senior trail and as a result Night Spirit was disqualified and Tarantino, who had been on the receiving end, was awarded the race.
Old Vic won the maidens, beating Hilly’s Cruiser by three lengths with This Is It in third.
The pups was closely fought, with a number in with a shout, but it was Get Up who prevailed from kennelmate and litter sister Hurry On with table leader Chicharita in third.
The puppy maidens ran their trail very well and it was another member of the Westgate Kyza/Dignity litter, Endeavour who came home a good winner from Ling Fell and Janet.
There were 25 in the all-in which saw Silver Dollar out in front for a long way, but being reeled-in at a rate of knots by Alliance who just couldn’t get there. Thorn Girl was in third place.
They were racing at Crag Farm on Saturday, too, but conditions determined that only six seniors were sent on their way.
Fallen Spring, who had won at the previous meeting, was again in admirable form and went on to take the old dog trail by a comfortable margin. Cinnabar finished ahead of Sweet Pea in the battle for second place.
There was another repeat win in the pups as the impressive Baroness came in clear of Serenity with Discard in third.
There was an easy winner to finish the meeting as Malinda ran away with the open restricted, having too much toe for Tinker. Romulus took third place.
Bridekirk had Jubilee Monday to itself and there were 58 runners for the five trails which saw victories for two of the championship contenders. Dairy Diamond went level with three others ion the race for the senior crown while Chicharita extended her lead in the pups.
Dairy Diamond had pressure from Enoch and Hello Dolly but pulled away smartly on the finish to win by five or six yards.
There were three in with a chance on the finish of the pups and table leader Chicharita knuckled down well to scrap it out and beat Shameless and Black Rose by a length.
Easiest winner of the afternoon was Brannigan who took the maidens by half the length of the finish. Barncroft Secret and This Is It were second and third.
Most eye-catching finisher of the day was Erin’s Lass in the puppy maidens. She flew at the death, weaving her way through rivals to get in front and go on to win by three yards from Thorn Dolly and Silver Wings.
White Diamond was turned out quickly after finishing third the previous day in the senior trail at Lazonby Fell. This time she was aimed at the open restricted and had a couple of lengths in hand of Silver Spangle to take the honours. Da Look took third.
It was a very good day’s trailing with the Mitchell Trophies going to the individual race winners, while special Diamond Jubilee rosettes were handed out to the ticketing owners.
The crack was very good so it was a pity that Carlisle races and the trotting at Appleby combined to lower the crowd and leave only two bookmakers to cover the meeting.
Thick mist caused a big problem at Kirkstone on Tuesday. The starting end senior trailer had become disorientated on the fell, and although the trail was run, and went well, the planned start of the shorter trails had to be changed to avoid confusing the hounds.
This meant that the route was too short, and consequently all four trails were void under time, so disappointment for the connections of the 102 hounds entered.
The senior trail brought a third success for Colleen, who had a great race up the finish with Velvet before going on to win by a couple of lengths, with Silver Moon running well into 3rd place.
There will be a Tipster Competition at the Dog Produce meeting at Ward Hall on Sunday - enter at the Secretary’s tent.
At the Whitehaven Area meeting, it was stressed that all trailers should inspect the fences on their routes to make sure that they are safe for hounds to negotiate. Fences may appear unexpectedly, or be altered, and everything possible must be done to protect our hounds.
