WHITEHAVEN Amateurs are on the hunt for a new manager after ex-Workington Reds striker Martin Harris stepped down.

Harris, in his second stint in charge of the club, resigned after the final match of the season – a 2-0 defeat against Team Northumbria, which saw the NE outfit take the Northern League Division Two title ahead of Carlisle side Gillford Park.

Amateurs lifted the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Trophy under his leadership and this season finished in a respectable 13th place.

“He believes he has taken us as far as he can, and that it’s time for a change,” said spokesman Bill Robson. “The lad did a tremendous job and there’s no animosity.

“Martin took us to our highest league position and won a trophy, which was a tremendous achievement at this level.

“Now we start looking for someone else. We’ll talk to the lads about it, and it has to be someone who can give a bit to the club and move us forward.

“But it won’t be an easy job as John George and Martin will be hard acts to follow.”

Harris, who spent four seasons at Borough Park in Workington’s Football League days in the mid-1970s, first managed Amateurs in the late 1990s.

In May 2009 he returned to replace George, who stepped down for family reasons.
